The Complete Guide to Oklahoma Business Licenses

Oklahoma does not issue a general state business license. Sellers need a sales tax permit from the Oklahoma Tax Commission, cities license specific activities, and trade licenses come from the Construction Industries Board. This guide explains each step for a new Oklahoma business.

Step 1: Form the LLC

File Articles of Organization with the Oklahoma Secretary of State for $100. Every LLC files a $25 annual certificate on its filing anniversary. See the Oklahoma LLC guide for every formation step.

Step 2: Sales tax permit

Register with the Oklahoma Tax Commission and file through OkTAP. The sales tax permit costs $20 for three years. New permits start as a six-month probationary permit that renews automatically for 30 months when returns are filed on time. The state rate is 4.5%, plus local rates. Employer withholding is registered with the Tax Commission too.

Step 3: City licenses

Oklahoma City issues licenses for specific activities and runs a separate contractor registration. Check your city for licenses, zoning and occupancy.

Step 4: Contractors and professions

General contractors are not currently required to hold a state license. The Construction Industries Board licenses electrical, mechanical, plumbing and roofing contractors and inspectors. Other professions are licensed by their boards.

Hiring staff and trade names

Employers register for unemployment insurance with the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission. Trade names are filed with the Secretary of State as a Trade Name Report.
