Your IRS tax ID when you are not eligible for a Social Security Number.
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a tax processing number issued by the IRS to people who need a US taxpayer ID but cannot get a Social Security Number, such as many non-US owners of US companies. ITIN Application — frequently asked questions
Does the IRS charge for an ITIN?
No. The IRS does not charge a fee for an ITIN, and you can apply yourself using Form W-7. Our fee is for preparing your application, reviewing your documents and supporting you through the process.
Who needs an ITIN?
People who need a US taxpayer identification number for federal tax purposes but are not eligible for a Social Security Number, for example many non-US residents who own a US LLC and must file a US tax return.
What documents are needed?
You must prove your identity and foreign status. A valid passport is the only document that proves both on its own. The IRS requires original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency, not ordinary photocopies.
Do I need to file a tax return with it?
Usually yes. A Form W-7 is normally submitted together with a federal tax return, unless you qualify for one of the IRS exceptions. We will tell you which applies to you.
How long does it take?
The IRS says to allow about 7 weeks to hear about your application, and 9 to 11 weeks during tax season (January 15 to April 30) or if you apply from outside the United States.
